On December 1,2023,the European Fusion Energy Organization(F4E)announced that the nuclear fusion reactor JT-60SA,jointly built and operated by Europe and Japan,has officially been put into operation.The reactor is a tokamak device,which started in 2007 and was assembled in 2020.It was successfully ignited on October 23 of this year.The device is located at the Naka Institute of Quantum Science and Technology Research and Development(QST)in Japan and is considered the world's most advanced tokamak.Its launch and operation marks a milestone in the history of nuclear fusion.

  The JT-60SA program is a pioneering project of the International Thermonuclear Fusion Experimental Reactor Program(ITER,also known as the Artificial Sun Program).The goal of the JT-60SA reactor is to study the feasibility of fusion as a safe,large-scale,and carbon free net energy source,so that it generates more energy than it consumes.The ultimate goal of both projects is to fuse the internal hydrogen nuclei into helium,releasing energy in the form of light and heat,simulating the processes that occur inside the Sun.
  It is reported that nuclear fusion can be carried out in different ways,and its process is cleaner than nuclear fission,without producing radioactive waste.If an economic fusion reaction is achieved,it will greatly reduce or even completely eliminate human dependence on fossil fuels.
